Too many people, especially women, think getting in shape is synonymous with “being skinny.”.  They diet, they deprive themselves, and they obsess about the perfect body.  As the years pass, we realize it is more about HEALTH, about truly caring for ourselves and improving our quality of life, than being thin.  The side effects of truly being healthy like better skin and a tighter body are merely awesome bonuses.

So, what does it mean to be “healthy”?

Good health is comprised of many different components, none more important than the food we put into our bodies.  Food has two purposes:

To nourish and to sustain.

Every time you reach for a piece of food, ask yourself if it is accomplishing either of these two things.  If the answer is no, PUT IT BACK.  Food is fuel, and when we choose real, whole foods in their natural state, we are giving our body the proper tools it needs to perform at its best.  Eating real food means no longer having to deprive yourself, which only ends up destroying your metabolism and making it harder to achieve permanent weight loss. Just as with most things in life, you get out of it what you put in.  Think about the car analogy if you will.  Suppose you are given this super sweet luxury car. When you get it, it is perfect.  Pristine. Then, instead of caring for it the way you should, you drive it into the ground, slam on the brakes, run into curbs.  Not only that, but instead of giving it the high performance fuel and oil it requires to lubricate its parts, and keep it running it’s best, you fill it up with inferior products.  You skip routine maintenance.   Pretty soon, your beautiful machine is no longer efficient.  It starts to break down.  It needs repairs.  Your body is the same way.  Provide your body with the right things and it will reward you with more energy, less disease, and an overall sense of well being.  Feed it crap, and that’s exactly how you’ll feel.  Like crap.

The next piece of the health puzzle is to keep your body in motion.   As I touched on in my post a few days ago, this DOES NOT mean pounding away on a treadmill for an hour or more.  This means doing compound, intense, real life movements that challenge and transform your body, all while firing up your metabolism, scorching body fat, regulating your hormones, and doing so without all the damaging effects of long, slow, boring cardio.

Do it because you’re worth it.  Do it to improve your quality of life.  Do it for your family.  Do it to boost your self confidence.  Just do it.

And last, but certainly not least, stop beating yourself up.  Stop diminishing your worth.  Sometimes, the hardest part of the journey is believing you are worthy of the trip.  There are plenty of people in the world who are going to try and knock you down, who don’t want you to succeed because they themselves are not.  Do not let anyone, including yourself, keep you from doing what you know in your heart to be right.  YOU know what you SHOULD do.  YOU know right from wrong.  YOU know the choices you make today, determine the outcome of tomorrow.  YOU know exactly what you need to do to get where you want to be.  YOU just have to decide that is important enough.  That YOU are worthy of it.  That you, and you alone, are in control of your destiny, and the only way to predict the future is to create it yourself.

Make TODAY the first day of the rest of your life.  Make TODAY the day you take control of your health.  Make TODAY the day.  You cannot go back and change the past, but EVERYDAY is a another chance to change your future.  Because no one else is going to do it for you.  All you have to do is decide.  Decide and commit.  Decide.  Commit.  Achieve.  Succeed.
